Heyawake Game Guide

📖 About

Heyawake is a shading puzzle played on a grid divided into rectangular rooms. Each room may contain a number indicating how many cells to shade. The rules: no two shaded cells can share an edge, no three consecutive shaded cells in any row or column, and all white cells must be connected. A beautifully balanced puzzle!

🎯 Objectives

Shade the correct number of cells in each room while ensuring all white cells remain connected and no three consecutive shaded cells appear.

🎮 How to Play

Click cells to cycle through: empty, black, or white. Each room must have exactly its target number of black cells. No three black cells can be consecutive, and all white cells must be connected.

⌨️ Controls

Click a cell to cycle: empty → shaded (black) → marked white → empty. Right-click or long-press to mark cells as definitely white.

⚙️ Game Mechanics

  • Each rectangular room has a target number of shaded cells
  • No two shaded cells can share an edge (orthogonally adjacent)
  • No three consecutive shaded cells in any row or column
  • All white cells must be connected orthogonally
  • A shaded cell cannot connect to another shaded cell across a room boundary

Features

  • Grid sizes from 5×5 to 15×15
  • Room detection and highlighting
  • Auto-check for rule violations
  • Progress saving

💡 Tips

  • Start with rooms that have 0 black cells - mark all white
  • Look for rooms where the target forces specific placements
  • Avoid creating 3+ consecutive blacks when marking cells
  • Use white connectivity to eliminate impossible black placements

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the rectangular rooms?
The grid is divided into rectangles of various sizes. Each rectangle (room) may have a number telling you how many cells to shade within it.
Can shaded cells touch each other?
No, shaded cells cannot be orthogonally adjacent (share an edge). They can touch diagonally.
What does white connectivity mean?
All white (unshaded) cells must to form one connected group - you should be able to reach any white cell from any other white cell through adjacent white cells.
Can shaded cells span across room boundaries?
No, a shaded cell cannot connect to another shaded cell that's in a different room. The shading constraint applies within rooms, not across them.
