Not all free tiles should be matched immediately. Your first priority should be matching tiles that are blocking the most other tiles. A tile sitting on top of three covered tiles is more valuable to remove than a tile on the edge blocking nothing. Count how many free copies exist for each tile type. If a tile has four copies and all four are free, matching them is low priority because they are not blocking anything critical. Focus on tile types where only two copies remain free, as these could become dead ends if left unmatched. Always scan the entire board before making a move. The most obvious match is not always the best one. Taking a few seconds to assess priorities can save you from an unwinnable situation later.

Mahjong Solitaire boards are built in layers, and tiles on higher layers block tiles below them. Understanding the layer structure is essential for planning your moves. Always check what is underneath a tile before matching it, because removing a tile reveals what it was covering. Prioritize clearing the top layers first. Tiles on higher layers block more tiles below, so removing them opens up the most options. If you clear bottom-layer tiles while upper tiles remain, you limit your ability to reach the blocked tiles. Use the 3D perspective to your advantage. In most digital versions, you can see which tiles are stacked by looking at the shadows and overlaps. Train yourself to identify the tallest stacks and target those areas early.

A tile is "free" when it has no tiles covering it and at least one side (left or right) is unblocked. Getting stuck happens when all remaining free tiles have no matching partner. The key to avoiding this is keeping paths open. When deciding between two possible matches, choose the one that frees the most tiles. Freeing four tiles is better than freeing two, even if the two-tile match seems more convenient. The more free tiles on the board, the more matching options you have. Watch for tiles that are "almost free" - covered by just one tile. These are your next targets. By planning two or three moves ahead, you can systematically free tiles that will unlock critical matches later in the game.

When a tile type has three or four copies available, the order in which you pair them matters. Matching the wrong pair can leave the remaining copies trapped. Before matching, trace where each copy is located and what it is blocking. The "long game" approach means sometimes leaving an obvious match on the table. If two free tiles of the same type are not blocking anything important, save them. Match the tiles that are blocking critical paths first, and come back to the easy matches later. If you notice a tile type where all remaining copies are in hard-to-reach positions, prioritize freeing those tiles early. Waiting too long can leave you with matching tiles that are both blocked, creating an unsolvable situation.
