Tower Defense Strategy Guide: How to Defend Every Wave

Where you place your towers matters more than which towers you build. The golden rule is to maximize the time enemies spend within range of your towers. Place towers at bends and turns where enemies must travel the longest path within firing range. Corner positions are the most valuable real estate on any tower defense map. A tower placed at a U-turn or S-curve can fire on enemies continuously as they navigate the bend. Straight sections of path offer the shortest exposure time and should be your lowest priority for tower placement. Always consider range overlap. A well-positioned tower covers multiple sections of the path, effectively doing the work of two poorly placed towers. Before building, visualize the range circle and confirm it touches as much of the enemy path as possible.

Every tower defense game is ultimately an economy game. You start with limited gold and must decide between building many cheap towers or saving for expensive powerful ones. In most games, the correct approach is a mix: start with a few cost-effective towers, then invest profits into upgrades and premium towers as the economy grows. Early game, prioritize towers with the highest damage-per-gold ratio. These are usually the basic or starter towers. Resist the temptation to save for expensive towers while enemies walk past your weak defenses. You need to survive early waves to earn the gold for late-game investments. Save a gold reserve for emergency tower placement. If a wave breaks through your defenses, having 100-200 gold in reserve lets you quickly plug the gap with an additional tower rather than watching enemies reach your base.

In tower defense games that allow you to build maze-like paths, you can force enemies to walk longer routes, giving your towers more time to deal damage. The key principle is creating the longest possible path without creating a shortcut that bypasses your defenses. The zigzag pattern is the most common maze structure. Alternate tower placements on either side of the path to force enemies into a back-and-forth pattern. Each turn adds exposure time and creates additional firing opportunities for your towers. Be careful not to over-maze. If your path is too long, fast enemies may still slip through, and you may run out of space for new towers later. Balance path length with tower density for optimal coverage.

Knowing when to upgrade an existing tower versus building a new one is one of the most important decisions in tower defense. As a general rule, upgrading an existing tower is more cost-effective than building a new one of the same type, because upgraded towers benefit from their original placement. Prioritize upgrading towers at the best positions. A level 3 tower at a bend outperforms a level 3 tower on a straight section. Always upgrade your best-positioned towers first to maximize the return on your investment. Time your upgrades between waves, not during them. Spending gold on an upgrade while enemies are advancing leaves you unable to place emergency towers. Complete all upgrades immediately after a wave ends so your defenses are at full strength before the next wave starts.
